Things to Consider Before or Just After Filing a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

In my experience as a Waco bankruptcy lawyer, here are some (but not all) points to consider before or just after filing for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

  • Do not make large, unusual purchases on your credit cards for items that would be considered unnecessary prior to filing for bankruptcy. I tend to tell clients not to buy a big plasma TV just before filing bankruptcy. It didn't work for Homer Simpson from The Simpsons and it will not work for you.
  • Make a budget. If funds are limited, discuss the problem with your bankruptcy attorney.
  • Attend all meeting when scheduled. These meetings may have deadlines associated with them, which if not met can result in delay or dismissal (the failure) of your case.
  • Provide your attorney with all documents they require as soon as possible.
  • Don't take money from your 401(k) or any other type of retirement account in order to pay bills prior to filing bankruptcy unless you speak to your bankruptcy attorney first.
  • Don't sell or transfer any assets or money to other parties without consulting with your bankruptcy attorney first.
  • Discuss any concerns you have with your bankruptcy attorney. You hired them to help you so use them.
