Don't let misconceptions stop you from getting help

Many people think they understand Chapter 7 bankruptcy, but just like so many other legal matters, there are far more complexities to bankruptcy than most people realize. Whether you have seen bankruptcy in a movie, read about it in a book or even heard about a friend's bankruptcy proceedings, you can never truly know what bankruptcy will mean for you in particular unless you meet with an attorney and actually begin filing.

Does Chapter 13 discharge my debts?

There tends to be a large perception between what people think bankruptcy does, largely thanks to portrayals of bankruptcy in movies and shows, and what bankruptcy actually does. Most people focus only on the fact that bankruptcy will cost you many of your precious assets, but this is only true in some cases, and it completely ignores all of the benefits that bankruptcy provides, such as debt discharge and protection from creditor harassment.

Bankruptcy can help protect your assets

Most people view bankruptcy as a life-changing legal admission of financial failure in which many or all of your prized, precious assets will simply be sold off to the highest bidder in order to save you from a hole that you dug yourself into with poor financial decisions. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Can bankruptcy discharge my credit card debts?

The holiday season is winding down, and many of us are going back to work or going back to school in order to resume our daily lives. Along with this, some of us may be looking at our bank accounts to see how much all of the parties and gift exchanges cost us over Christmas and the New Year, and the results may be frightening. When you swipe that credit card, you do so expecting to worry about the bills later. Unfortunately, later will arrive one day, and you may not like what you see.

Should I file for bankruptcy?

If you are facing a significant amount of debt, you might wish to consider, and possibly already have considered, filing for bankruptcy. Some people shy away from the prospect of bankruptcy because they believe that people will think less of them for filing, or that they will lose some of their most precious assets, but this is not always the case. Depending on your circumstances, bankruptcy could be a great decision for you.
